The forecast for the 4th looks to be sunny and warm, the perfect weather to be outside indulging in the best of what this time of year has to offer. While we hope you have a great time celebrating our nation with your friends and family, keep in mind the extended weekend also has a track record for increased DUI arrests, traffic accidents and fatalities. A DUI arrest can really dampen the spirit of the holiday so please enjoy the season while staying safe and avoid a DUI this weekend.

Increased DUI Enforcement

Law enforcement officials are well aware of the statistics and therefore will be out in full force to detect any impaired driving, both on the roadways and on the water. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has their Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign in effect, which highlights a constant police presence searching for drunk drivers as a way of deterring people from drinking and driving. Additionally, Operation Dry Water, whose mission is to reduce the number of alcohol- and drug-related accidents and fatalities through increased recreational boater awareness, heightens their awareness and enforcement annually around July fourth.

Tips to Avoid A DUI This July 4th

Don’t let a DUI arrest ruin your holiday weekend. Follow these tips to stay safe while avoiding a DUI:

  1. Stay sober and try to enjoy the holiday without alcohol. Although this is an obvious one, it is not always easy.
  2. Designate a sober driver. If you don’t know anyone willing to be the designated driver, download the SaferRide app on your iphone or Android phone to find a safe ride near you.
  3. Keep track of how much alcohol you consume and be sure to incorporate some water between alcoholic beverages. Use this handy website to calculate your estimated BAC, but remember there are many contributing factors and this is just an estimate.
